Taro Maruyama was deeply inspired by the Mingei philosophy of Soetsu Yanagi, and played a significant role in inviting Yanagi and other leading figures of the Mingei movement to Matsumoto, Nagano Prefecture. He was one of those who contributed to the development of the Mingei movement in the city of Matsumoto.
According to the Hakusuisha Chinese Dictionary, keiroku (鶏肋, lit. "chicken ribs") means "something not particularly useful, yet too precious to discard."
Scattered throughout this beautifully bound volume are works that must never be cast aside — illustrated stories crafted by Taro, woodblock prints exhibited at the Kokugakai, eggshell inlay works, painted letters, and more.
