Katatsuke is another name for bingata, the vividly colored stencil-dyed textiles of the Ryukyu Kingdom (present-day Okinawa).
In 1938, Keisuke Serizawa traveled to Okinawa with Soetsu Yanagi, Shoji Hamada, Kanjiro Kawai and others to survey and document its crafts, and to collect examples of them. The results of these efforts were widely introduced through exhibitions and publications. This book is one of them. It contains 17 mounted swatches of antique bingata and aigata (indigo stencil-dyed) textiles, along with explanations of the base fabrics, stencils, types of dyes and the names of colors, the dyeing process, and the patterns.
A rare and valuable book that conveys the richness of Okinawan dyed textiles. Signed by Keisuke Serizawa. (With original box and Japanese paper wrapper.)
